04/28/25 | The Rehm Copy Newsletter If you're reading this, you likely have a business and within that business, you own an email list. This is a list of people that engage your business or have even bought from you. I want you to think of this email list like your house. In order for someone to join your list, they need to have opted in. You posted an opt-in form, or some lead magnet/offer, and that was your invite, giving people an opportunity to come into your house (AKA your email list). Now, I want you to consider how you would treat house guests... Would you constantly ask your house guests to do things for you? Or would you treat them to a beverage, and maybe dinner in the evening? Assuming you're a good host, you would serve them, make sure they feel at home, and aim to make sure they have a good time and want to stay or come back sometime soon (assuming it's somebody you like...) If you were a bad host, you would do the opposite... You would ask them to clean stuff up for you, you'd have them make dinner, you may as well just ask them to pay your electric bill while they're around. And guess what? The good host gets people to come back again in the future, those guests speak good things about the host to other people, and ultimately the guests feel indebted to the host and want to do something nice for them. But the bad host makes people want to leave immediately, forces the guests say bad things about them, and the guests want absolutely nothing to do with you or your house ever again. This is how you need to treat your email list. Don't get me wrong - there is NOTHING wrong with selling. We sell in pretty much every single email we send out for clients, because when you have a great product, why wouldn't you sell it hard? But the core aspect of this is that we keep the reader's cares top of mind. We give them content that they want to see and consume... Content that they will find valuable... Content that will make them want to come back for more. And then we tie the sales content into that. When all you do on your email list is sell sell sell, you are acting like a bad host. And your email marketing results will reflect it. Adam P.S. Allow me to practice what I preach here.
